The Shimano engineers were charged with the task of creating a new clincher wheel with a strength to weight ratio the same as 100% carbon wheel. They also had to have the superior braking performance of an aluminium braking surface and all this had to come at an affordable price. A new jointing process using phosphoric acid allows an aluminium extrusion of half the normal thickness for the braking surface and well of the rim to be fused to a carbon fibre mid section.
